Topic of lectures

The planned series of lectures will be devoted to the analysis of the text A Short Treatise on the Methods of Dhyana (an English translation in progress can be downloaded here). The text is attributed to the prominent Buddhist scholar and translator Kumarajiva, who first studied the teachings of the so-called traditional Buddhist schools (pejoratively referred to as Hinayana), but later began to devote himself to Mahayana teachings. Kumarajiva’s text is devoted to the analysis of the practice of jhanas (dhyan in Sanskrit), meditative meditations, and is based on the teachings of the traditional school of sautrantika, but it is also an interpretation from the point of view of Mahayana Buddhism. This approach is similar to the teaching method of Bhante Dhammadīpa, who received his basic meditation training in Southern Buddhism, i.e. the Theravada tradition, which he now interprets from the perspective of Mahayana, i.e. Northern Buddhism.
